#11 - Browsing Magazines
Looking for contemporary magazine articles in English that I could use in teaching, today I tried to
visit two familiar sites. On Inside Indonesia, I discovered a brand new issue since the last time
I looked -- number 87 (July-September 2006) entitled "Access to Justice" with online articles by
Agung Putri, Annie Feith, Irianto Subiakto, Gerry van Klinken, Muhajir Lubis, John A. MacDougall,
and Edward Aspinall. The articles are grouped into the categories Justice, Liberal Islam, Culture,
Environment, East Timor, Politics, Bahasa Indonesia, and Regulars. Only about 25% of the articles
are online; the other ones look enticing, too. True, everything will go online eventually (apparently,
after about four months), but people should subscribe. It's a great resource. What would we do
without it!?
My second search was less successful. I was looking for Latitudes Magazine, views from 6 degrees
above to 11 below the equator, published in Bali. I remember hearing that it had gone out of print.
But I thought somehow the old issues would still be somewhere in cyberspace. Maybe they are,
but I haven't found many yet, except for this one on Calendars in Indonesia and this one on
Jaringan Islam Liberal-- two that were posted on NIU's Seasite. If anyone knows where to find
more issues of Latitudes online, please let me know, and I will pass the information on to readers.
