# 4 - "On the net" in _Inside Indonesia_
Since I'm in the middle of a move back to the U.S. from India, this update will be briefer
than previous ones. Is it because I have been privileged to enjoy the luxuries of laptops and
wifi during this period of living overseas that I have been reflecting on the changing forms of
communication between 'here' and 'there' in recent years? Whatever the reason, I think the
social and human dimensions of internet-facilitated communication have become increasingly
interesting in recent years. What started for many as just a tool to access news and opinion
has become much more focused, sophisticated, and interactive.
An illuminating way of seeing how much has changed in the last decade is to look at all
the "On the Net" columns in Inside Indonesia. They come at the end of the issue, under the
headings Regulars or Resources.
To compile this list, first I went to the left sidebar on the Inside Indonesia home page
under Resources, then Topic Index, then Culture, then Resources, then Internet. That route
gave me sixteen articles, taking the list from its inception in March 1996 up to April 2000.
This original list provided the template for my updated list. For the more recent issues,
I simply searched the Inside Indonesia archives for "On the Net". The first thirty odd entries
all had "On the Net" in the title, which was what I was looking for, and the ones from the last
five years all had more specific titles than the earlier ones. Then I double-checked by
browsing the table of contents of the current and recent issues.
So here is the list of thirty _Inside Indonesia_articles over the last decade on using the
internet for research on Indonesia:
