The International Directory of Indonesianists

The International Directory of Indonesianists This directory was first compiled and edited by Rita Smith Kipp and published by the Indonesian Studies Committee in 1994. Because this is merely a list and not a database, it is not flexible for users nor can those listed edit their own entries. In the near future, this will change as we move to a powerful, text based, relational database. Soon we will be sending out a new questionnaire to all Indonesianists listed in the Directory of the Association for Asian Studies. If you are not a member of AAS and would like to be listed in the new database, simply and we will send you a copy of the questionnaire. In the meantime, users should refer to the following paragraph.

How to Use this Directory

The entries are arranged alphabetically. The directory consists of 636 entries submitted by individuals who returned the original questionnaire plus a smaller number who have submitted entries since then. The date of the most recent revision is indicated (see below).

The questionnaire from which the directory was derived asked for responses to a number of coded categories, but stressed that providing any item of information was, of course, optional. Some respondents elected not to provide a residential address and phone, for example; many were not yet equipped with e-mail. In the full entries, the codes appear consistently in the following order, however, even if particular items were omitted:

NA: Name. Last name first, all caps
M/F: Gender
DA: Date the questionnaire was completed
OF: Office or professional address
OP: Office telephone number
EM: E-mail addresses
FAX: Fax address
RES: Residence address
HP: Home telephone number
CIT: Citizenship
DIS: Discipline
EDU: Degrees received, listed from most recent to least recent
GEO: Geographic areas of expertise and ethnic groups
LAN: Languages known, used
EXP: Professional experience related to Indonesia
PUB: Includes performances, exhibits, projects, reports, speeches, etc, as well as publications
